R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings, Winston-Salem, N.C., said in May that it was still on track for a $3 billion buy of British American Tobacco's United States unit despite rumors that regulators would block the deal, according to a report by Reuters.

"As far as we know, we still believe we're on track to close the deal mid-year as originally proposed," said R.J. Reynolds spokeswoman Maura Payne.

Media reports have recently suggested that BAT's sale of its Louisville, Ky.-based Brown & Williamson unit could be blocked by the Federal Trade Commission on competition grounds. Staff attorneys at the FTC are conducting an anti-trust review of the deal.
