The World Health Organization has sponsored the world's first international public-health treaty that attempts to dissuade children from smoking and to help adults quit the habit, Reuters reported. The global treaty took effect on Feb. 27.

WHO claims the treaty could "save millions of lives through strong warnings on cigarette packages and bans on tobacco advertising and sponsorship," according to Reuters.

"I encourage all countries ... to implement the range of measures that will make tobacco use less and less attractive," WHO director-General Lee Jong-wook said.

The United Nations agency reported that 4.9 million people die from tobacco-related illnesses each year, making tobacco the second-leading cause of preventable deaths globally...
