New York Sen. Charles Schumer announced March 10 he plans to introduce legislation that would prohibit the U.S. Postal Service from handling the shipment of cigarettes purchased over the Internet, reported the Business Review in Albany. Schumer's bill, which is being developed with N.Y Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, would mean fines of $1,000 per offense and jail time for repeat offenders.

"The U.S. mail has become the last refuge for online cigarette merchants and it's time that this loophole be closed," said Schumer, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores' NACS Online. Spitzer described the shipment of cigarettes purchased over the Internet as a "massive criminal enterprise."
