Recently, a local school district decided to restore elementary art teachers to its faculty ranks, after many years of doing without. True, the positions were created in response to elementary classroom teachers' demands for daily preparation periods and the necessity of finding some form of supervision and occupation for their students during those times. Still, the faculty's resounding endorsement of visual arts teachers seemed gratifying; it was perceived as recognition that art education mattered and that it was receiving inadequate attention.
