Arts education at the turn of the millennium faced some major challenges: Proponents of arts education had to nurture the development of the arts and culture in an environment increasingly dominated by marketplace forces and to engage a larger percentage of the population in thoughtful interaction with the arts, not only as audience members but also as hands-on participants in creating and performing art work.
