Students today in K-12 schools receive their education in varied settings, with many formats and diverse organizing principles. Besides residential and day schools and public, independent, parochial, and home schools, there are now charter, magnet, cyber, and year-round schools. In some areas, neighborhood schools are being revitalized; in others, the open school format popularized in the 1960s still prevails.
