In the present atmosphere of standards-driven education, some art educators are caught up in the--project of using assessment to drive educational reform. Dropping their questions about its appropriateness to the field, art instructors are expected to keep up with the educational trends and avoid further marginalization, to vie for the federal dollars attached to standards/assessment, and to adopt a top-down, scientific/rational approach imposed from above. This is a questionable program that deserves greater scrutiny.
