Heart disease, cancer, and stroke remain the top 3 leading causes of death for people in the United States. (1) Eating 5 to 9 daily servings of fruits and vegetables will significantly reduce the risk of these diet-related chronic diseases and perhaps certain lung diseases, gastrointestinal problems, obesity, and diabetes. (2-3) In addition, researchers estimate that consuming at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables would reduce the incidence of cancer by approximately 20%. (4) The goal of the National 5-a-Day Partnership, a collaborative effort of the produce industry and public health organizations, is to increase intake to at least 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables by all Americans as of 2010 (http://www.5aday.gov).
