The planned merger of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants will bring benefits both to the two organisations and to the accountancy profession as a whole. Many members of the organisations believe that there should be a reduction in the number of accountancy bodies, and it is clear that the time has now come to rationalise the profession. This will accountants stronger representation to the UK government and internationally.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to address CIMA members through the pages of your magazine. Your President and I are trading places temporarily to make known our views on the proposed merger of our two bodies. For the avoidance of doubt I am the one without the beard...
