Activity-based costing (ABC) is seen as a sophisticated accounting tool. It is used by Torres S.A. of Spain, a quality wine and brandy producer. The company had previously used a direct cost system, but introduced ABC to tackle the fixed overhead problem. Production fixed costs were allocated on value of bottles produced, with post production fixed costs subjected to further rcritical ABC analysis.

Activity-based costing (ABC) has emerged in the English-speaking world as a sophisticated accounting tool used by a number of large manufacturing companies. In this article we explore the use of ABC in a very different type of environment--a. medium-sized family-owned company producing high quality wine and brandy in Spain.
