IBM has converted its proprietary mainframe operating system multiple virtual storage (MVS) into Unix, adding to its reputation for reliability, security, and advanced systems management. The IBM System/390 Parallel Enterprise Server (S/390) is its latest mainframe computer and can handle large transaction volumes giving consistently high performance. The MVS has been re-branded at OS/390 and will also operate Windows NT server applications.

IBM's stated intention to convert MVS, its proprietary mainframe operating system, into Unix always seemed unusual. However, now that it has been done, the endorsement of Oracle, SAP, Peoplesoft, JBA, JDEdwards and Baan means that the concept of using a mainframe to run a client/server packaged application has to be taken...
