Does market capitalization misclassify the top European companies?

The main league table in the Financial Times European Top 500 is ranked in order of market capitalization which tends to favour companies where finance is mainly dominated by equity share capital, particularly the UK. A broader evaluation could be gained if the table was rearranged according to varying financial criteria. An analysis of the top 50 European companies from the Financial Times European 500 between 1993 and 1997, is provided, based on market capitalization, sales, profit before taxation, return on capital employed and number of employees.
