There were cheers all round after Singapore's Minister for Information and the Arts, Lee Yock Suan announced on 5 June the liberasation of Singapore's broadcasting industry. The Media Corporation of Singapore, long the Lion City's sole broadcaster, was granted two DTV licenses, while Singapore Press Holdings, the nation's largest publishing group, was awarded licences for two free-to-air TV channels and two radio channels.
In the wake of this long-awaited liberalisation, SPH announced it would invest US$29 million in a newly formed broadcasting arm, MediaWorks.
