Contrary to popular perceptions, going digital can save money, especially in routers. Switchers too are more cost effective than their analogue counterparts, but while the costs are similar, the functionality is usually greatly enhanced
With analogue products, internal circuits have to be very carefully designed so as not to impair the signal. With digital, the signal either gets there or it doesn't. This makes router design a lot cheaper, more reliable, and any circuit drift will have little or no effect -- unlike analogue.
