When ASTRO first emerged on the scene in 1996, it seemed like Malaysia's broadcast and production sector was in a good position to mature and eventually play a more dominant role in Southeast Asia. Plans were even for ASTRO to become a regional broadcaster at one point.
It wasn't just the exciting plans being unveiled at ASTRO either, there were also a few more terrestrial and cable initiatives in the pipeline then, bearing with them the promise of dynamic competition and plurality of choice for the local, and perhaps even regional, audience.
