Electronic newsgathering (ENG) is one of the most cost-conscious areas of programme making. In recent months, it's not the time-honoured quibbles over the pros and cons of one tape standard over another that has taken the spotlight. Instead, it's tapeless acquisition.

Tapeless cameras are of course nothing new. Avid blazed the trail in the 1990s with what has now become Editcam II from its former collaborator Ikegami, which unveiled a new DNE-31 stand-alone recorder for the range at this year's NAB in Las Vegas.
