Anime grows up; anime is no longer just for kids as the uniquely Japanese form of animation is attracting more adult viewers. Animation studios are following the trend and producing more adult-oriented anime for this burgeoning market.(analysis)(Tokyo International Anime Fair 2004 (TAF))

Anime for adults or viewers in their late teens and up account for a fifth of some 70 anime programmes aired every week by Japan's six networks; more if you count that aired by non-terrestrial broadcasters.

The ratio of anime for the non-kids market has been on a steady increase since the 1980s, a result of the aging of the Japanese population. This market that grew up with manga magazines and books, and although now middle-aged, are still watching anime programmes, often in late night hours.
