And two became one. The biggest news of the year for what is usually a relatively placid market was the merger of Singapore's only two terrestrial broadcasters. Launched with much fanfare just four years ago, SPH MediaWorks, the TV broadcast arm of Singapore's dominant publishing company, Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), finally bowed to competitive pressure.

Under the banner of market rationalisation, SPH MediaWorks and the city's other free-to-air broadcaster, MediaCorpTV, announced in September that the two companies would merge their TV and some of their print operations.
