Digital Asset Management (DAM) started off as a somewhat exotic luxury that could be afforded only by large networks or state broadcasters. A step up from plain old asset management where tapes were merely indexed on an electronic database, DAM puts the content itself into the digital domain.
At its most basic, users can access browse copies of what is in the tape library, but even this offers a vast improvement. Users no longer have to wait for spooling and tape loading, and multiple users can view the same content simultaneously, all from the desktop. No wonder their shoes last ...
