With The Curse of the Golden Flower (see sidebar), director Zhang Yimou seemed to have lost all ability to make small yet engaging films about simple peasant folk (I am disregarding his sincere but lackluster attempt with Riding Alone for a Thousand Miles (2006). The weakly scripted movie sorely lacks Zhang's usual flair for telling a good yarn and his knack for imbuing character and charm into his actors).
