DI stands for Digital Intermediate and was introduced as an alternative to the laboratory grading process that has been in use with few changes for over 100 years. The lab process is based on red, green and blue "printer lights" that filter the film while it is being printed. Color changes are applied to the whole image, a technique often referred to by colorists as primary corrections. Video based color correction uses mattes, keys and windows to make isolated corrections and the DI process brings this capability to projects that are finished on film.
