The role of classical Greek culture in modern Greek society is studied. It is argued that the past functions as a symbolic capital or authoritative resource in modern society, which is often exchanged for economic or national gain. One example occurred in 1911, when the Greek government gave the Emperor of Germany the rights to the Temple of Artemis excavation project in exchange for assistance in persuading Turkey to stop its blockade against Greeks living along its borders.
