Researchers on the northwest coast of North America have observed marked cultural distinctions between the inhabitants of the northern group and the central groups. An evaluation of the duration of marked cultural differences between both groups has been made possible with the increasing amount of wet-site perishable data discovered, primarily basketry and cordage artefacts, and secondly, perishable fishing equipment. The artefacts represent at least 300 years of fishing practices in the area.
