Archaeologists have taken aerial photographs of the Massif Central southern edge in 1998. Findings from these photographs reveal new data that can be related to palaeoenvironmental study of the French provincial landscape. The site being studied is known as the Le Causse Mejean, which lies approximately 80 km northwest from Montpellier. It is a Jurassic limestone plateau west of the Cevennes in the center of the southern edge of the Massif Central. The 1998 aerial photographs were believed to re-emphasize the scientific potential of the cairns.
