Cahners Economics forecast: upturn in '90

The U.S. economy experienced a mild slowdown last year, notes James Haughey, vice president, economics and research, Cahners Publishing. But he expects a modest recovery this year. How "modest?" Cahners Economics is forecasting about a 2% gain in Gross National Product (GNP) this year and slightly less than a 2% rise in the industrial production index (see charts).

The downturn in 1989 in these measures of the economy's performance was small. "So there's not an awful lot of slack to be taken up," as Haughey points out.
