Jim Mann, the author of Beijing Jeep: A Case Study of Western Business in China, was Beijing bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times from 1984 to 1987 and, from the start of his tenure, was intrigued by the attempts of Western businesses to capture the Chinese market. His efforts to understand the economic, political, and cultural factors that made ventures between Chinese and foreign firms so problematic in the 1980s pay off richly in Beijing Jeep.
