All of us at the Helen Dwight Reid Educational Foundation are deeply saddened by the deaths of Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, president of the board, and Douglas J. Kirkpatrick, executive director and general counsel of Heldref Publications.
Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, the first woman to be appointed United States Ambassador to the United Nations, was known as an ardent defender of freedom and human rights. Among many honors, in 1985 she received the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian award.
