Smith Hempstone died on November 19th of complications from diabetes at a hospital in Bethesda, Maryland He was 77.
Hempstone was a syndicated columnist who served as U.S. Ambassador to Kenya from 1989 to 1993, during the rule of Daniel arap Moi. Hempstone began his journalism career as an African correspondent for The Chicago Daily News after having spent four years in Africa as a fellow at the Institute of Current World Affairs.
