The author of Bdrbaros: Spaniards and Their Savages in the Age of Enlightenment, David J. Weber, is Dedman Professor of History and Director of the William P. Clements Center for Southwestern Studies at Southern Methodist University. He has written or edited more than sixty articles and twenty-two books, including The Spanish Frontier in North America (Yale University Press, 1994). Barbaros covers relations between the Spaniards and unsettled, unconquered Indians--or savages, as the Spanish called them--from about 1759 to the wars of independence.
