The groundbreaking artist Robert Rauschenberg once said that his fascination with performance art had to do with the fact that we--all of us--are always performing. Every day, in settings intimate and public, private and professional, we put on a face, adopt certain gestures or a manner of speaking, in pursuit of an agenda, be it benign or otherwise. No doubt a magazine interview is an extreme example.

Which is why several stories in this issue are particularly compelling.
