The Vespa has long been a celebrated example of great 20th-century design--it even earned a place in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. Now, students from New York's Parsons School of Design are using the bike as inspiration, dreaming up apparel and accessories for the Vespa lifestyle. Their designs will be presented at a Parsons benefit honoring Saks Fifth Avenue chairman and chief executive Fred Wilson on May 9.

"It's an entirely different ergonomic experience from any other way of travel," said Tim Gunn, chair of the Parsons fashion department. "You are sitting in a more demure way, so the kinds of clothes that lend themselves to a Vespa are broader. We're doing children's, men's and women's wear."
