Luminaries of American fashion and the big screen tried to keep their cool as they piled into the New York Public Library for the 2006 Council of Fashion Designers of America awards. Inside the hallowed rooms, temperatures were high--literally and figuratively. "I'm nervous," said Michael Kors, who was presenting. "I didn't even take a Xanax." Onstage, emcee Jeremy Piven threw out one-liners like "The difference between a straight man and a gay man is two tequilas." For Jessica Simpson, the all-star crowd was enough to keep her entertained. "Every single person I admire and want a free dress from is here," she said, gushing.
