DEVIN THOMPSON
Thompson, 15, a freshman at Southwest DeKalb High School in Decatur, Georgia, spends his summers in Detroit. working the grill outside his grandfather's club and restaurant, Bert's Jazz Marketplace. "To make more money we decided to start barbecuing out in front on Saturdays," he explains. Wynton Marsalis has played the no-frills joint, which also hosts popular karaoke-style open-mic nights. During the school year, Thompson plays football and basketball and runs track. He hopes to become a professional athlete.
