High seas: encrusted jewels lifted fresh from the ocean.(Accessories Flash)(Brief article)

W, December, 2006 by Rosen, Jamie

In terms of jewelry, the life aquatic can be the life exotic. Rene Boivin's starfish brooch comes heavily encrusted with amethysts and cabochon rubies, along with an esteemed pedigree. Of the original three made in the Thirties, one was owned by film star Claudette Colbert and another by Standard Oil heiress Millicent Rogers. The Third (shown here) has been kept in one anonymous family--until now. Ejoque offers a new take on the sea crawler, a luminescent ring with more than five carats of diamonds surrounding a large gray moonstone. Another deepwater treasure, Nicholas Varney's shell brooch, glistens with barnacle-like clusters of rose-cut champagne and white diamonds, spinels, fire opals and orange sapphires. Ready to go fishing?
