Industry forecast: housing starts to drop 5%. (Industry Overview)

Experts expect housing starts to slow throughout the nation, but builders in some areas see only steady growth. Rising interest rates and slower economic growth will contribute to an overall decline in housing starts next year, industry experts say. Look for a 5% drop, as housing starts reach only 1.329 million units in 1995, compared to this year's forecast of 1.398 million units, according to Cahners Economics.
The decline is in sharp contrast to the nearly 9% increase forecast for housing starts from 1993 for 1994. In 1993, housing starts totaled 1.288 million.
