McNeil Gains FDA Candy Approval For Splenda.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ -- McNeil Specialty Products Co. has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to market Sucralose, its low-calorie sweetener better known by its trade name Splenda, as a general purpose sweetener.

This move comes 16 months after the initial regulatory approval for the sweetener, which opened the door for Splenda's use in such categories as beverages and baked goods. The expanded approval means Splenda can now be used in the manufacture of hard candies and chocolate bars.

Splenda can hold up to extreme temperatures in order to achieve desired texture and mouthfeel in chocolate, something that other sweeteners have trouble doing, according to Carolyn Merkel, director of research and development at McNeil. The same...
