Buyers who are downsizing from minicomputers to high-end PCs can add Big Blue to their lists of suppliers of high-end PCs. The new system, the highest-end server the firm now offers, will compete directly with Compaq Computer Corp.'s SystemProo servers. Currently, Compaq carries 70% of the server market. The new IBM system will sell for a considerably higher price than the comparable Compaq unit at $29,000. Having recently formed an alliance with a little-known computer manufacturer, IBM expects to strengthen its presence in the powerful microcomputer industry by rounding off its promised threetier server strategy with a system for every network environment.
