When AT&T's Transmission Systems Business Unit talks about quality, suppliers listen. After all the division with its design and manufacturing facility based in North Andover, Mass., won the 1992 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the Massachusetts Quality Award, and has been ISO 9001 certified for three years.
More important for suppliers, the division buys about $300 million of material--most of it electronics--for production of network multiplexers, lightwave systems, and digital terminals. If a supplier expects to retain business or increase its share, it must show continuous improvement in product quality, delivery, and service.
