When you think of personal computer manufacturers, the name Digital Equipment Corp. does not immediately come to mind. While the Massachusetts-based company is the third largest computer company in the world, it is best known large network systems and workstations, not PCs.
But Digital entered the cut-throat PC marketplace about three years ago as part of its restructuring program designed to turn the company around after years of unprofitability. The company formed its PC Business Unit and has brought to market a family of PCs ranging from its 4-lb Hi-Note notebook to its server, which all use x86 microprocessors rather than DEC's proprietary Alpha chip. At the end of 1994, DEC was the 11th largest PC manufacturer and has vowed to crack the top five by 1997....
