Dealer group focus turns to networking. (Ikon Office Solutions Inc.)(Computers, Business Systems and Office Products)(Quality '97)

It seems as if every few months corporate purchasing managers are hearing news that IKON Office Solutions, the big office equipment dealer, is adding another smaller dealer to its nationwide network. Recently, it purchased six suppliers of office equipment in Georgia; now, it has 35 locations in the state. In the fourth quarter of last year alone, IKON bought 29 smaller dealers nationwide. For the year, it purchased 100 companies in all, with annual revenues topping $878 million.
At the same time, IKON, which used to be called Alco Office Products, is gradually renaming some of its existing dealer locations. These dealers, which are owned by IKON, tend to be run independently and had been retaining names familiar to office equipment buyers who purchase...
