Intermodal service gains go unnoticed.

These are bittersweet times for the intermodal industry. Strong international traffic sparked a 7.3% uptick in inter-modal loadings last year. However, well-publicized service problems at West Coast ports and along the Union Pacific Railroad disrupted intermodal service and are prompting shippers to view inter-modal as a system that provides sub-par service.
Evidence: Transportation buyers responding to a PURCHASING Magazine poil ranked intermodal below all other modes for on-time performance and quality of service. Respondents gave intermodal only slightly better marks for its ability to avoid shipment loss and damage.
