The telecommunications industry may soon be using an operating system called Linux because of its scalability, reliability, and its cost: It's free. Cahners In-Stat Group believes that in the near future the telecommunications industry will benefit from an operating system. The majority of PC server makers are expected to begin offering Linux on their boxes next year.
Linux is cheaper and more robust than Windows NT and has open source code to allow for customization, making it a compelling alternative for the telecom industry, says Brian Strachman, research analyst for Cahners In-Stat Group.
