OECD: World steel rebound is in sight.

A general recovery in steel demand and production will materialize in 2000, says Franco Mannato of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (oecd). However, he thinks world steel trade will shrink 11% this year and remain flat next year. After falling 2.2% last year, such trade barriers as dumping duties will depress world steel trade to 160 million tonnes in 1999 and 2000, according to the latest oecd outlook.

The shock of the Asian economic crisis has affected world steel demand, which fell 2.6% last year and is expected to fall 2.8% this year to 755 million metric tons.
