IBM to ship set-top box system-on-a-chip MPUs.(microprocessors)(Brief Article)

IBM will begin manufacturing a family of microprocessors designed to transform televisions into interactive two-way information appliances. Big Blue has combined its high-speed PowerPC microprocessors and other television set-top box (STB) components onto a single "system-on-a-chip." The new chip will give set-top box manufacturers better system performance and lower costs.

The chips also provide more functionality for electronic program guides, Web browsing and interactive applications such as home banking.
