Raw material shortages could result in another challenging year for capacitor buyers, but overall supply conditions for most passives, connectors and electromechanical devices should improve over 2000.

Demand for passives was strong in 2000, driven by the booming telecommunications industry, solid computer shipments and the trend toward more electronic content in automobiles.

"It's was a record year for us," says Glyndwr Smith, assistant to the CEO and senior vice president at Vishay Intertechnology. The Malvern, Pa.-based passives maker recorded almost 40% revenue growth in 2000 due primarily to growth in the cellular phone industry.
