* Intel will soon begin shipping its 845 chipset that allows its Pentium 4 processor to work with low-cost synchronous DRAMs. The chipset means the prices of PCs using Pentium 4 chipsets will be reduced. Intel had been shipping only its 810 chipsets that work with more expensive RDRAM chips. RDRAMs cost two to three times more than SDRAMS.

* More bad news for the semiconductor industry. Worldwide sales of semiconductors fell in June to $11.6 billion from $12.7 billion in May. The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) says a slow worldwide economy, sluggish PC and cellular phone sales, and an inventory glut continue to plague the industry. However, SIA still expects chip sales to rise in fourth quarter 2001.
