The Sept. 11 terrorist attacks had farreaching effects on the transportation industry. President Bush signed a $15 billion aid package Sept. 23 to bail out the U.S. airline industry, which has suffered tremendous losses in the wake of the attacks. The legislation "will provide urgently needed tools to assure the safety and immediate stability of our nation's commercial airline system," Bush said in a statement.

Amtrak also asked the federal government for about $3 billion in emergency funds over the next 18 months, the Wall Street Journal reported. Amtrak wants to use the money to buy additional passenger cars, improve tracks and electrical systems and boost safety and security in the wake of increased passenger demand.
