* Worldwide silicon wafer area shipments totaled 1.26 million square inches in the third quarter, a dip of 0.8% from the second quarter, according to Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). Silicon wafers are the fundamental material used to build chips. "The relatively flat wafer shipment figure for the quarter was to be expected given the weakness in the broader technology sector," says SEMI's Stanley Myers.
