The first step to strategic sourcing success is communication. Getting more value from your suppliers requires getting more information from them in a more timely manner. To move away from bulky quoting packages and on to streamlined e-sourcing, suppliers must be accustomed to the instant communication that e-sourcing brings.
Rick DeHart, vice president of worldwide procurement for cable equipment maker Scientific Atlanta (Atlanta), knew back in 1998 that his company needed a better way of communicating information and changes to suppliers before it could move ahead to more advanced sourcing processes in the company's nearly $1 billion annual spend.
