SIA revises chip forecast upward.(Semiconductor Industry Association)

James Carbone The Semiconductor Industry Association says 2006 will be a pretty good year for chip companies. That means a likely boost in capital spending that could increase supply. The SIA has revised its industry forecast and now says global semiconductor revenue will grow by about 10% to $249.6 billion in 2006.
The SIA's earlier forecast pegged chip revenue growth at 7.9%. The forecast was revised upward because of stronger than expected semiconductor demand from cell phone, computer and consumer electronics manufacturers. "The fastest-growing major end-market segment is cellular telephones, especially third-generation (3G) phones," says George Scalise, SIA president.
